Sheriff Hartman reports, On December 4, 2023, Davie County Sheriff’s deputies were called to 167 Dogwood Lane, Mocksville, N.C. for a report of a medical emergency. Upon arrival, Sheriff’s Office deputies located Candace Collett deceased in the basement of the residence. Deputies requested the assistance of the criminal investigation unit and detectives responded to the scene. Over the course of the past 5 months, Detectives have conducted an extensive investigation into the death of Ms. Collett. Multiple interviews were conducted with persons that were on scene the night of her death and other persons that may have had information relative to the case. Detectives also attended the autopsy of the decedent and were able to obtain multiple search warrants for information that may be relevant to the case. The investigation and autopsy indicate that Collett died from a fentanyl overdose and that the drugs were supplied to her by several persons. On Monday April 22, 2024, Detectives presented the case to the Grand Jury in Davie County. The Grand Jury returned indictments on the following individuals for the charge of 2nd Degree Murder, Death by Distribution, and Conspiracy to sale and deliver fentanyl. William Franklin Tatum, age 46 $500,000 secured bond Mocksville, NC Brent Sanford Jones, age 43 $200,000 secured bond 127 Norma Lane, Advance, NC Lanny Rodgers Collett, age 43 $200,000 secured bond Mocksville, NC Jessica Nicole Ferry, age 41 $200,000 secured bond Mocksville, NC All four persons were taken into custody on 4/29/2024 at the following locations: Mr. Collett was taken into custody at a job site in Bermuda Run. Tatum was served while incarcerated in the Davie County Detention Center on other charges. Jones was taken into custody at his residence. Ferry was taken into custody at Southern Family Medicine in Mocksville, NC. The Davie County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to thoroughly investigate crimes involving narcotics, including the delivery, sharing of, or sale of drugs that then cause a person’s death. We will never stop working to arrest and prosecute those who provide drugs in our community. Today, and every day, we are thankful for the work and support these dedicated individuals provide to help the Sheriff's Office run smoothly. We appreciate each of you!  On 4/19/2024 at approximately 1:00 pm, deputies were made aware by school resource officers that a 2023 Ford Super Duty belonging to the Davie County School system had just been taken from the parking lot of South Davie Middle School. Patrol deputies responded to the area and started searching for the stolen vehicle. A deputy quickly located the vehicle on Greenhill Road near County Home Road where a traffic stop was performed on the vehicle. The suspect and driver was identified as Tracy Lynn Payne, female, age: 42, of 1090 Chickadee Lane, Woodleaf, NC, and taken into custody. While on the scene of the traffic stop, a separate victim drove up stating that Tracy had just came to that victim’s home on Greenhill Road and attempted to gain entry through the back door. Payne was unable to force entry and returned to the stolen truck and left traveling down Greenhill Road, which is when it was originally spotted by the deputy. Tracy was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle, attempted breaking and entering as well as carrying a concealed weapon (brass knuckles). Tracy was presented before a magistrate where she was given a $5,000.00 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 2, 2024 in Davie District Court.  Sheriff Hartman reports: On April 16, 2024, at 2:49 pm, the Davie County Sheriff’s Office responded to 456 Pineville Road, Mocksville, NC. A person on scene had called 911 and reported that someone had been shot. Deputies located a female deceased on scene and two other persons in the home. The deceased has been identified as Jade Marie Sales, age 34, of the residence. Ms. Sales suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect is Dennis Jerome Sales, age 38, of the residence. Sales left the scene before Deputies arrived in a 2007 Toyota Camry with a North Carolina license of TLX – 6824. The vehicle is red and has a black front bumper. Sales should be considered Armed and Dangerous. We believe that he has left the area of Davie County. There was an 18-year-old female and a one-month-old baby in the residence at the time of the shooting. The 18-year-old called 911 and reported the incident. She, along with the baby, hid in the residence and stayed on the line with Davie County Telecommunicators until Deputies could clear the residence and locate her. Additional children were located in schools and then brought to the Sheriff’s Office by School Resource Officers for safety reasons. The Department of Social Services assisted with taking care of the children, including a medical checkup for the one-month-old, and finding placements with family. UPDATE, 04/17/24: Dennis Sales was located this morning in Kingsport, Tennessee and was taken into custody. The Davie County Sheriff’s Office will be working with our local District Attorney’s office to have Sales extradited back to Davie County on the charge of murder. UPDATE, 05/02/24: Dennis Sales was extradited back to Davie County and is in custody at Davie County Detention Center.   Davie County Sheriff C.C. Sanford - served two terms from 1874-1880 Calvin Cowles Sanford (1843-1929) was one of Mocksville's most prominent businessmen. Born in Davie County at County Line, Mr. Sanford enlisted with the Confederate Army in March of 1862. After his military service ended in 1865, Sanford returned to Mocksville and taught school in Farmington for 2 years before becoming a store clerk for Brown Brothers Store, which he then took over and operated as C.C. Sanford and Sons Company. Married in 1872, C.C. Sanford had eight children. He passed away on March 6, 1929 and is buried in Joppa Cemetary in Mocksville. Around 1880, C.C. Sanford bought the Howell-Brown-Sanford house, which still stands at 537 Salisbury Street. Also on the property is the original building for the Mocksville Academy, which was chartered in 1827 and for which Sanford later served as a trustee. On April 10, 2024, at approximately 8:20 PM, Deputies with the Davie County Sheriff's Office made contact with a Suspicious Person in the parking lot of Cartner’s Food Mart located at 3741 US Hwy 64 W. The person was recognized and identified to be Nicole Yvonne Milles of Woodleaf, NC. Reasonable Suspicion that Milles is involved in criminal activity was quickly developed, prompting K9 Deputy Beck to conduct an open-air sniff of Milles’ vehicle with K9 Smoke. The open-air sniff resulted in a positive indication for narcotics. During the performance of a Probable Cause search over 6 ounces of Methamphetamine were located, in conjunction with Alprazolam, MDMA, Oxycodone, and marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia used to facilitate the selling of narcotics. Milles was charged with Felony Trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Sch II, Possession of Methamphetamine, Felony Maintaining a Vehicle, Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Sch I, Felony Possession of Sch I, Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Sch IV, Simple Possession Sch IV x2, Simple Possession Sch II, Possess Marijuana up to ½ oz, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia. Milles is currently being held under a $250,000.00 Secured Bond. Milles is scheduled to be in Davie County District Court on May 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM.

On April 8, 2024 at approximately 4:11 PM, Deputies with the Davie County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a gold in-color GMC truck in the area of Barney Rd, Advance. Upon making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, probable cause to search was quickly developed. Jessica Marie FLORES of Advance, NC, was found in possession of green Fentanyl, purple heroin, and drug paraphernalia; Cedric Herman JONES of Advance, NC, was found in possession of purple heroin and drug paraphernalia; and Junior Roy BROWN of Advance, NC, was found in possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia. Additional paraphernalia was also located in the vehicle. FLORES was charged with PWIMSD Sch II CS, PWIMSD Heroin, Possession of Heroin, Felony Possession Sch II CS, (M) Maintain Vehicle for CS, Simple Possession Sch VI, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana. FLORES was issued a $20,000 Secured Bond and is scheduled to be in Davie County District Court on May 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM. JONES was charged with Possession of Heroin and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. JONES was issued a $5,000 Secured Bond and is scheduled to be in Davie County District Court on May 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM. BROWN was charged with Simple Possession of Sch VI and Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia. BROWN was issued a $1,000 Secured Bond and is scheduled to be in Davie County District Court on May 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM. Congratulations to Donald “Fireball” Jones on his retirement from Davie County Sheriff’s Office! Fireball has served DCSO in the Detention Center for 25 years, most recently providing inmate transportation. His service to Davie County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Davie County is much appreciated and he will be missed by those that have worked alongside him. We wish Fireball the best on his retirement!

Trip has served DCSO in various roles throughout his 25 years of service, as a Patrol deputy, School Resource Officer, and most recently as a Detective with the Criminal Investigation Division. We are honored to have had Trip as a part of the Sheriff's Office and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement!
 On March 28th, Deputy Karen Austin and Lt. Mike Butero had the privilege of joining some of the residents at Somerset Court of Mocksville in dyeing Easter eggs. A good time of festive fellowship was had by everyone! DCSO is always glad to be a part of the Davie County community.
