An anecdote from George Smith's service as Sheriff, excerpted from the book Davie Sheriffs, compiled by Marie Benge Craig: “It was early in his career; there were no vehicles supplied to the sheriffs and deputies. He drove the family car with his work and was away from their home on a Saturday until midnight. The next morning, Estelle (his wife) and their son used the car and went to church. George phoned a deputy to come pick him up and they went to the church and beckoned Estelle to come outside. He said, 'I’ve got to have the car; the trunk is full of moonshine liquor.'"
